Once upon a time, 4 people had a dream - of owning a farm of their very own. As the universe would have it, their paths crossed in life and a firm friendship was born out of their mutual dream. After viewing many a possibility over a number of years, the day arrived when they drove up to the rusty gate of a little farm in the Cederberg. A weeping willow, a windy farm track, a historic homestead with white washed walls... they were sold and that’s where the journey began, 2013.
They were united in an approach to rehabilitate the buildings and the land by adopting ethical guidelines and permaculture principles, community living and working together in harmony with the environment. The land was cleansed and blessed, respecting those who lived here before us but inviting in a new energy for the next chapter and beyond.
Now, 10 years on, a younger generation have joined the circle of dreamers.
The community is growing, the vision is growing. Dream on.
Long before we were here, the Khoi-Khoi roamed this land. Their paintings still fill the caves of the area, telling the story of their journey.
Tsui’goab is a Khoi-Khoi deity to whom they ascribe the creation of the African world, of man, and the elements. It is he that makes crops prosper and gives cattle skins, full bellies and happy hearts. Tsui'goab is the supreme being of the Khoi-Khoi, and often the subject of the strangest of stories. He is known to have first lived many generations ago, when he was said to have been an old witchdoctor with a broken knee. Among the Hottentots, he was renowned as a sorcerer of great skill. Having been regarded as extraordinarily powerful during life, he was invoked after death as one who could still bring help and protection, and with the passing of time, he became closest to their conception of God. He made the clouds and lived in them, and brought the rain. Thus through him the cattle were plentiful and the grazing good.
The Khoi-Khoi always pray in the early morning with their faces turned towards the east where Tsui-Goab's first light appears.
At Pendoornkraal, we love nature! And we aim to let things be as natural as possible. That's why we do not use any nasty gunk or artificial products on our land. We farm just enough for us to live on, barter with and sell for a little income, and let nature do the rest.
Check out our blog for the latest in-season goodies available from the farm stores!
